The Harley Davidson came into being in the early years of the 1900s. since then, the heavy duty motorbike has been the stuff that legends and dreams have been made up of. The Harley Davidson motorbike symbolized the dream of American dream and the spirit of rebellion that characterized the dreary reality of the years after the ending of the Second World War. Conceptualized and created in the years of 1902-1904 by two teenagers, namely William Harley and Arthur Davidson, the Harley Davidson soon became a cult symbol of its time.

The heavy metallic quality of the Harley Davidson bike gave it an aura of macho aggression. It became synonymous with adventure and daredevilry that young Americans identified with. The high speed quality of the bike made it akin to a symbol of a rebel cult. This heavy duty image was validated especially when during the chaotic post war years; there were a slew of Hollywood films made on the entire outlaw bike culture. These movies portrayed the outlaw motorcycle cult and all the violence that came with it. Even the infamous Hells' Angels were associated with the Harley Davidson bikes as they usually rode these. As a result, the Harley slowly took on a rather violent and chaotic image, which led to the inevitable public outcry. Perhaps, unjustly so, the image of the legendary motorbike got vilified in the public forum.

However, this did not take away the thrilling image of the bike and still millions of young Americans and others wanted to be part of this alternative rebel culture. The legend was far from dying out. Even now, the Harley Davidson has withstood the onslaught of time and remained as a status symbol. This is unbelievable considering the differences in the fashion statements and how these underwent a transition over the ages. In spite of all this, the legend has still remained. In fact the most important reason why this self perpetuation has taken place is because the Harley cult does not consist of merely the bike but also the numerous accessories that go with it. There are Harley denims and t-shirts for both men and women. There are also different kinds of sunglasses, gloves, backpacks and the like. All these bear the Harley logo. Such memorabilia is very highly demanded in the market.

Then there are the Harley Davidson tattoos. Tattoos have always been an expression of individuality and uniqueness. Fans get the Harley logo branded on their body. A standard Harley tattoo usually consists of the brand name, surrounded by wheels, eagles and other such standard images. Fans who want to be part of the Harley cult without riding the bike can always use these options to make the Harley cut.
