Guiding a heavy bike through traffic filled with twisting turns requires a good amount of muscle strength. When riding, you are in the natural environment and exposed to all the elements. Of course riding in the sun on a beautiful day is the ideal environment, there often will be times you will need to fight the elements of wind, rain and even snow. Keeping your bike, and yourself, held up and riding against a 50 mph wind takes a tremendous amount of strength. Your mental awareness must always be up to par as well.

The biggest physical threats to motorcyclists are dehydration and heat stroke. Even hypothermia can happen in many situations and climates. It’s surprising to some that you can become dehydrated in any kind of weather. It does not need to be a warm or hot climate for dehydration to occur. You need to plan ahead and keep your body hydrated, especially before a big road trip. If you are riding in heated conditions, try to drink about a quart of water for every hour of riding.

Keep your skin covered and protected when riding as well. Although this is mainly for skin protection, it will also help protect you to protect against losing moisture to the wind and sunburn.

If you ever feel faint, nauseas or have blurred vision, pull over and rehydrate your body as soon as possible to avoid heat exhaustion and possible heat stroke. If you feel you or a friend might have waited to long to rehydrate, try to get to a cool shower or pool for immediate relief. If you feel it is going into the heat stroke phase, get to a medical facility as soon as possible for medical attention.

Dehydration and possible heat stroke can be avoided completely by keeping your body well hydrated and wearing the proper attire, geared for your trip.

Of course having the wind blow through your hair gives you that "free and easy" feeling, but is it really worth the risk of a head injury? If you are in an accident, bones can break and heal. Skin can suffer major abrasions and heal as well. But there is a very probable chance that a serious head injury will never heal. Your quality of life will never be the same and neither will your loved ones lives. The freedom of riding without a helmet can be short-lived and risky, however it is a personal choice that many riders choose to make. Just remember it is your brain you are protecting and your "brains" are not easily repaired.

If you decide not to take a risk on a head injury and make the smart choice of wearing a helmet, there are some important factors to consider when purchasing one.

Motorcycle helmets need to fit a certain way and you need to buy a helmet that not only fits your head size, but fit the shape of your head as well. You do not want this piece of protection to fall off your head during the course of a crash. Helmets are not "one size fits all". If a helmet shifts around too much when in a crash, the padded protection will not be in the place it needs to be. It can also easily fall off as well.

A helmet should fit snugly and almost feel a little too tight. The helmet will sit squarely on your head. There are cheek pads that should touch your cheeks, but not press into them. Also remember that a helmet will loosen up a bit as it is worn because the comfort liner will continually compress and loosen with use. Basically, a new helmet should fit snug and comfortable.

Boots that go over the ankle are the best choice for the protection they provide for your feet and ankles. Some riders prefer to wear tall boots to protect their shins for ultimate protection. Motorcycle clothing has become very high-tech and comfortable as well. When shopping for appropriate motorcycle gear, keep in mind comfort and safety first and foremost.

When considering what fabric to wear, leather comes immediately to mind, but don't forget that textiles provide its advantages as well. We know that leather offers its benefits by providing better abrasion protection and is breathable. However textile garments are going to better to provide weatherproofing and will do better in cold temperatures. Textile is, of course, less expense than leather clothing.

More important than the material of the garment you choose, it's the fit that matters most. You need your biker clothing to fit snug for protection and comfort.
