Getting off the highway and exploring off-road riding can be a fun and great experience. When riding off-road, you will use many of the similar skills you utilize for street riding, however there are skills and extra gear that are specific for riding off-road.
The first thing you will need to check when choosing to drive off-road, is to see if it is legal to do so. Then you must check to where the boundaries are. It is easy to be riding on a designated, legal road and accidentally trespass onto private property. Also remember the land that is available for off-road riding is usually monitored, so ride responsibly.
Some of the risks when riding off-road are obvious. There are usually no painted lines or speed limit signs. Depending on the road, you are also most likely to encounter objects lying on the road like rocks and fallen trees. You will need to know how to react when coming up upon holes and ruts in the road. Only ride off-road when you are an experienced and capable rider. You need to be in control of your motorcycle and know your limitations. There are conditions you will encounter that are quite different from highway riding.
Protective gear is of great importance when riding off-road. You will need goggles or a face shield and helmet. Wear sturdy long pants with kneepads integrated in them. Boots that at least go over the ankle are important for protection. This is also a time to wear gloves with full-fingered protection and knuckle padding is preferred.
Responsible off-road riders stay out of trouble by being prepared with the proper gear, familiarity with their bike and knowing their limitations. Ride safe.
