There is always a big debate among bikers about wearing a motorcycle helmet while riding. Of course having the wind blow through your hair gives you that "free and easy" feeling, but is it really worth the risk of a head injury? If you are in an accident, bones can break and heal. Skin can suffer major abrasions and heal as well. But there is a very probable chance that a serious head injury will never heal. Your quality of life will never be the same and neither will your loved ones lives. The freedom of riding without a helmet can be short-lived and risky, however it is a personal choice that many riders choose to make. Just remember it is your brain you are protecting and your "brains" are not easily repaired.
If you decide not to take a risk on a head injury and make the smart choice of wearing a helmet, there are some important factors to consider when purchasing one.
Motorcycle helmets need to fit a certain way and you need to buy a helmet that not only fits your head size, but fit the shape of your head as well. You do not want this piece of protection to fall off your head during the course of a crash. Helmets are not "one size fits all". If a helmet shifts around too much when in a crash, the padded protection will not be in the place it needs to be. It can also easily fall off as well.
A helmet should fit snugly and almost feel a little too tight. The helmet will sit squarely on your head. There are cheek pads that should touch your cheeks, but not press into them. Also remember that a helmet will loosen up a bit as it is worn because the comfort liner will continually compress and loosen with use. Basically, a new helmet should fit snug and comfortable.
